The traders of the Tema station have successfully turned the pedestrian walkways or pavements into a mini-market as authorities watch on.

Market women at the Tema station are found of selling their items such as food, clothes, electrical gadgets, hand sanitizers, noisemakers, and educational materials on the pavements and these activities have narrowed the human walkway at the marketplace, causing a whole lot of inconveniences including loss of lives and properties.

Some of these women are killed by cars.

It could be recollected that the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) issued a warning to traders on the pavement of the Kumasi Central Market to vacate the place to pave way for construction works.

But as KMA is poised to evacuate the Kumasi traders from the pavements, business on Tema streets has just begun and booming.

The traders, speaking to SN 24 said, “we are aware our activities are illegal but we are left with no other choice but to sell here since no place has been allocated for us to sell.”

“We pay tolls to authorities every day and through these petty trading we are also able to put food on our tables for our families, “they said.

The merchants have however used the opportunity to appeal to the government to allocate them to a place to sell their products as they have no other means of livelihood.
