Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako known by many as chairman Wontumi has beseeched the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to consent to the decisions made by the Electoral Commission of Ghana to create a New Voter’s Register in order to deliver credible election in December.

Speaking at the “Let My Vote Count Alliance” press conference held on Wednesday, January 23, 2020 in the capital of the Ashanti Region, Kumasi, the Regional chairman recalled that the actions of the NDC in the ‘Let My Vote Count Alliance’ was instigated in 2016 when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) protested against a new voter’s register whiles in opposition.

He explained that the then president, John Dramani Mahama rebuked the action and established that the Electoral Commission (EC) is not affected partisan complaints since it is an independent body.

“In 2016, the NPP demonstrated in Accra against the let my vote count alliance. President Mahama entreated his “bull dog team” to fight us. I was hit with a plastic bullet as many of the people suffered violence in the act,” he said

“President Mahama later revealed that no political party could influence the decision of the EC with their demonstrations. Our question today is that, what caused the immediate change for the former president to entreat his party to embark on demonstrations?” he enquired.

The coalition of political parties led by the biggest opposition party, the NDC staged two demonstrations, one in Tamale and the other in Kumasi against the invention of a new Voters Register.

According to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, the former president John Mahama must remember his previous statement and conform to it.

“Ghanaians do not care much about the protest march yet as the ruling government, we have to make reflect the NDC on certain statements made. Just like the former president counseled us sometimes ago that the EC is an independent body and our willpowers cannot alter their decisions, we are calling on them to do same,” he said.

He further questioned the National Democratic Congress and argued that the amount invested in the creation of the New Voters Register is lesser as compared to the era where the erstwhile president Mahama, spent 485 million on the register.

“They were moaning that the money involved in the new registration is huge. Has there been a time when the registration exercise done by the Electoral Commission was free? Even when the EC’s logo was petitioned to be changed during the time of the NDC, did they accept our request to consider the financial stand of the country? Former president Mahama said the EC is an independent body,” he spoke.

“During the time of Mahama, an amount of GH₵485 million for the register. Why is he disturbed when the EC is spending GH₵395,000,” he added.

Mr. Antwi Boasiako advised the NDC to let the independent Electoral Commission opt for what is best for the country in order to help sanity prevail in the December polls.

“We are pleading unto the NDC to leave matters in the hands of the Electoral Commission to make 2020 a free and fair election year,” he ended.
