EC Lays Out Plans to Kickstart Voters’ Registration Exercise in June

Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) has given a comprehensive roadmap for its voters’ registration exercise scheduled for June.

The commission is expected to begin the compilation of the new register from late June 2020. The process will be done within 40 days.

The EC laid out its plans to members of the various political parties at an IPAC meeting today.

The Deputy EC Chair, Dr. Bossman Asare said “we also announced to them [Political Parties] the protocols we have put in place to ensure that the voting process is very, very peaceful, safe and secured.”

He also added that the processes for the registration of new voters have also been explained to the political parties.

He mentioned that the Ghana Card and passport remain the requisite materials needed for the registration.

“So what that means is that, even if you don’t have the Ghana card and the passport, you still qualify to register as a voter from the end of June,” he said.

However, he explained that “in the event that you don’t have a Ghana card, and you don’t also have the passport, what it means is that, two people who are registered to vote can guarantee for you to be able to register”.

Per reports from Joyonline, a pilot registration will begin in the first week of June.
