Five people sustained gunshot injuries when residents of old Subriso of Wassa East in the Western Region clashed with police over land litigation with Ghana Rubber Estate Limited( GREL) on Tuesday.

The residents claim GREL brought in the police when they visited their site to sit them down to agree on an issue that was resolved by the Lands Commission some years back over the land given out to GREL.

They claim that GREL came to old Subriso to plant rubbers 53 years ago of which acres of land were released to GREL for the rubber plantation but, the community has also developed to the point of the rubber plantation.

The community folks say, the issue was sent to Lands Commission to resolve the matter and it was agreed on that GREL release 100 acres of land to old Subriso but GREL released only 30 acres of land to the people.

The residents of old Subriso now claim the community has developed to a point that, they have used all the lands at their disposal, so the rest of the 70 acres of land remaining be released to the base on the agreement at Lands Commission but GREL in the other way round brought in the police which resulted in the shooting between the residents and the police.

Three residents and two policemen sustained gunshot injuries.

The Western Regional Police Commander, DCOP Felix Fosu Agyeman, and his men went to the Chief's palace to call his people to order and settle the matter.

While they were at the palace, some of the irate youth went to GREL to beat up their security guards at the post.

However, calm has been restored in the area for various economic activities to go on.
