The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has called on the Ministry of Health (MoH) to ensure that their safety remains one of the utmost priorities in the sector especially at deprived areas.

This is as a result of the recent attack on nurses and midwives with the recent happening on Monday, February 3, 2020 at Sewua where Ms Ama Eshun, a registered community health nurse at the Sewua Health Centre in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region was allegedly gang-raped and killed by her violators although the cause has not been officially confirmed by the Police.

 

 

In a statement released and signed by its President, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo and General Secretary, David Tenkorang-Twum, on Friday, 7 February 2020, the GRNMA condemned the killing of the Ruth and appealed to the Ghana Police Service “to investigate this matter with the urgency it deserves and bring the perpetrators to book.”

The GRNMA also commiserated with the "husband and children and the entire family" of the deceased nurse and further urged all members of the GRNMA to “remain calm as we liaise with our Ashanti regional executives and the security agencies to bring justice to the family."

Speaking on Angel FM morning show on morning, the incoming Ashanti Regional Chairman of Nurses Association, Mr. Afriyie Anto condemned the act and called on the Ministry of Health to take seriously take the safekeeping of Nurses and Midwives serious.

He cited various instances where certain inhabitants have threatened the lives of nurses in destitute parts of the country yet nothing was done about it.

Mr. Anto thoroughly condemned the act and called on the security service to bring perpetrators to books by the close of the week else, the GRNMA will effect a decision that will best suit their safety.
