North East Regional Executive Committee of the NPP backs calls for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to contest the up-coming presidential primaries

The North East Regional Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in a crunch meeting on Friday 9th April 2021 overseen by the Regional Chairman, Mr Fuseini Nurudeen,  resolved to support calls for the Vice president H.E Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to contest the upcoming NPP presidential primaries towards electing a flagbearer for the 2024 presidential elections.

The Regional Executive Committee further resolved to give H.E Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia "our unalloyed support should he decide to join the race."

The decision was taken mainly to dispel rumours that some key members of the Regional Executive Committee do not support calls for the vice president to join the flagbearership race.

The leadership has resolved to support the vice president not because he comes from the region but "we see him as the best bet for the NPP going into the 2024 elections especially if indeed we want to superbly prosecute our ‘‘Break the 8’’ agenda."

"H.E Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is the only person in the political history of Ghana to have been nominated by a presidential candidate as running mate for four (4) consecutive times.

"This has made him more popular than any of the potential flagbearer hopefuls for the 2024 elections.

"Besides, the vice president is about the best economist in Ghana today and that is abundantly made manifest in the way he has so brilliantly managed the economy that was almost collapsed by the end of 2016.

"Also, Dr Bawumia singlehandedly ‘destroyed’ the NDC in the eyes of the Ghanaian voter with his constructive criticisms of the management of the economy by the NDC especially between 2013 and 2016.

"He did not only criticize, but he also proffered superior alternative approaches to managing the economy which largely attracted the attention of many well-meaning Ghanaians to his display of brilliance resulting in the NPP’s massive win in 2016 general elections.

"He rendered the NDC so helpless such that their communicators and foot soldiers had to resort to attacking Dr Bawumia’s person instead of debating the issues."

Since Dr Bawumia’s emergence into the political limelight in 2008, he has received varied commendations and praises from religious leaders, academia, CSOs and distinguished personalities from both within and outside the country for his brilliance, competence, tolerance, humidity and his servant-leader leadership style than any politician in recent history in Ghana and those have largely made Dr Bawumia a household name in Ghana.

Based on the foregoing and many other reasons, the Regional Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party in the North East Region "urges our brother H.E Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to consider joining the race since many Ghanaians across the political divide are yearning to see him become the next president after H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo."

"And so, we the NPP leadership of the region will do everything within our reach to ensure that Dr Bawumia gets the vote of every single delegate in the region."

In a related development, the Regional Executive Committee took notice of a press statement by a faceless group calling itself  ‘Concerned Northern Grassroots of NPP’ that sought to suggest that H.E Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia can not be a suitable presidential candidate for the NPP going into the 2024 elections because he could not help the Hon. Hajia Alima Mahama and the Hon. Solomon Boar to win the Nalerigu/Gambaga constituency and the Bunkpurugu constituency respectively in the 2020 elections.

"We think the statement by the group was born out of mischief, crass ignorance and hatred," they revealed.

"If the group were that abreast with the political history of what is now known as the North East Region, they would have known that the only seat the NPP ever won, since the beginning of the 4th republic, before the emergence of Dr Bawumia into the Ghanaian political discourse was the Nalerigu/Gambaga constituency in 2004.

"In other words, the North East Region was a no-go area for the NPP before the discovery of Dr Bawumia. But we can confidently say now that the North East Region is a strong hold of the NPP. We have moved from no single seat from 1992 to 2000, to 4 out of 6 seats from 2004 to 2020 and hope to win all 6 seats in 2024. We regret so much for losing the Nalerigu/Gambaga and the Bunkpurugu seats.

"We inflicted the painful defeats in these two constituencies on ourselves and we have since resolved to recapture them in 2024.

"By the analogy of the group, should the NDC blame H.E John Mahama for the defeat of the NDC in the Damongo constituency in the 2020 election and suggest that he is no longer suitable to lead the NDC?

"All political watchers in Ghana know that the NPP’s votes keep soaring in every election in Northern Ghana since 2008 because of Dr Bawumia.

"We wish to urge the group to find a better reason against Dr. Bawumia for this particular reason cannot be sustained even in the most elementary political discourse," they ended.
