The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Honorable Mahama Ayariga has called on government to open the country's land borders as done to the Airports revealing that it is 'discriminatory' to open the airports and close land borders.

The world was hit by the novel coronavirus pandemic and as part of measures to curb the virus, the government of Ghana closed land and air borders of the country, however, the Airports were opened by the president in August 2020 whiles the land borders remained closed.

People have therefore called on the government to open land borders, but the president will have none of that as he seems unperturbed by their insistence but the decision will not deter the Bawku Central lawmaker from insisting on the reopening of the borders, a thing he described as discriminatory.

In an interview with journalists, the lawmaker revealed that the continuous closure of the border is likely to affect the Ghanaian economy, a decision he believes would hunt the nation someday if the fight for COVID-19 is finished.

"I always use these opportunities to make a point and that's the closure of land borders, as an MP representing a border constituency, I always feel that the decision to open the airport and yet close the land borders is in essence discriminatory.

"The threat is coming from Europe and some African countries, and so if you open Airports and put in place measures, then let's equally open the land borders and put in place measures that will stop the threat, Otherwise the continuous close of the land borders really threatens the economy of many of these border constituencies and if we don't die out of Covid-19, we'll die out of poverty and so, I urge the president to consider also reopening the land borders" the MP explained.

The Bawku Central MP, however, confessed that politicians have contributed immensely to the recent spike in the Covid-19 cases in the country as according to him, they breached the Covid-19 protocols extensively on their campaign trails in the run-up to the general elections last December.

"During our campaigning, we all breached extensively the Covid-19 protocols and in essence, we deepened a certain perception that covid-19 wasn't a threat which of course it is, and also people came in their numbers to celebrate Christmas from countries with a higher number of covid-19 cases and so that was one of the reasons why we've seen the spike in the cases," he said.

So far, over 2.1 million people worldwide have died out of the virus with Ghana contributing almost 400 of these deaths. Ghana's covid-19 active case count has risen sharply after it declined the number of months ago and authorities are cautioning against a second wave, which is said to be more deadly than the former.

Soireenews continues to admonish our readers and followers to heed to the protocols in other to avert a second wave.
