Over 800,000 Ghanaians take COVID-19 vaccine jab

Over 800,000 Ghanaians have been vaccinated against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the Ghana Health Service has announced.

According to the Director-General of the Service, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, nearly all health workers, both public and private, have also been vaccinated.

"As a service, we have demonstrated our resilience in delivering primary and secondary care services to the entire population of Ghana and this has attracted positive national and global attention." he said during the 2021 first senior managers' meeting of the Service held in Kumasi.

Ghana on Wednesday, February 24, 2021, took delivery of 600,000 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine made by the Serum Institute of India (Covishield) and the COVID-19 vaccination started in Ghana on March 2, 2021.

About 50,000 more were received from the Indian government.

Many are due for their second shots but delays have hit the facility across the world.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), countries that received initial shipments under COVAX could soon be running out of doses.
