Parliament is Lying, Some MPs have Contracted Covid-19 – Muntaka

The Minority Chief Whip, Mohammed Muntaka has countered statement from Ghana’s Parliament denying reports that two Members of Parliament (MPs) have contracted the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

According to Muntaka, the reports are true and that, 13 staff of the parliamentary service have also tested positive for the virulent disease.

Contrary to parliament’s assertion that the Covid-19 test results are yet to be known,  Muntaka said in an interview that, MPs were told of their status, prompting the Speaker’s directive for mandatory testing for all MPs and staff of parliament, an article from theghanareport.com has said.

A statement from Parliament yesterday, refuted the reportage by Starrfmonline which suggested that two MPs and 13 staff of the lawmaking chamber have tested positive for Covid-19 after testing.

The statement, signed by the head of the Public Affairs Department of Parliament, Ms Kate Addo, and said the result of the covid-19 testing exercise is yet to be known.

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu had described the media reports as "speculative journalism."

The Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Aaron Ocquaye, on May 19 directed the Parliamentary Service Board to take steps to ensure all members of Parliament are tested for COVID-19.

The decision, the Speaker said, was part of measures to ensure that all MPs were safe during the period of COVID-19 outbreak in Ghana.
