Nana Akua Afriyie, the Queenmother of Fankyenebra has expressed disappointment in the governments approach towards this year’s District Level Election exercise.

The National Commission for Civic Education in partnership with the Electoral Commission of Ghana and National Local Authority of Ghana yesterday, October 1, 2019 embarked on the launch of Education and Awareness Creation Campaign on the District Level Elections and Referendum in the Amendment of Article 55 (3) in the Ashanti Region.

According to her, Government’s inability to define the language of the people to address them on the subject of District Level exercise creates limitation in citizen’s urgency to attend to such. Nana revealed that the various politicians in their pursuit for power humbly approach the Local Authorities through dialogues suitable for Traditional rulers but after they are elected to leaders, they fail to apply same approach especially during the District Level Elections.

She advised that the successfulness of the DLE’s would depend on the dialect employed for effective communication by the NCCE in their mission for a high turnout.

“During the time of no central government, we knew how to manage our own affairs better in events surrounding the society. There were Unit Committee Members who worked hand in hand with the various Chiefs in their communities. Due to democratic governance, majority of decision making policies have been handed to the Central government”

“We have no problem with that yet they need to consult us to communicate withinhabitants. They should not charge the people for failure to attend because the approach is wrong,” she said.

Nana Akua recommended that the National Commission for Civic Education should have sought for ideas from Traditional leaders in the various communities in order to seek a method to reach out to their people in the rural areas.

“Lots of chiefs were not invited so as majority of queen mothers. Fortunately, I am present and it is incumbent upon me to carry the message along and enlighten the people on what to do. That is why there is always the need to partner with us"

“They are complaining about low turnout. We know nothing about the efforts they are putting up to increase it. They should revisit the former days and involve the Chiefs and community leaders in their decision making body,” she ended.
