Sheikh Abdul Salam Ahmed, Northern Regional Chief Imam

The Northern Regional Chief Imam, Sheikh Abdul Salam Ahmed has enjoined the Muslim community to show a good lifestyle as they go through the Ramadan fast.

He said while Muslims are expected to go through all the daily steps of Ramadan, they should not lose sight of the existing directives and safety health protocols recommended to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an interview with the Soireenews on Thursday, April 14, 2021, the Regional Chief Imam, expressed confidence that the Muslim community would go through the one-month Ramadan fast peacefully, safely and come out with spiritually sound mind.

The annual observance of Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and it lasts twenty-nine to thirty days, from one sighting of the crescent moon to the next.

Fasting, which starts from sunrise and ends at sunset, is obligatory or Fard for all adult Muslims.

It is the time of spiritual reflection, self-improvement, heightened devotion and worship. Muslims are expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam.

Sheikh Abdul Salam Ahmed said though the COVID-19 situation had created unusual times, particularly during this Ramadan, Muslims must remain disciplined by observing the protocols, especially during the performance of the ablution before prayers.

“We should not forget that we have been advised not to touch our faces, mouths and noses; however, in performing ablution, we touch these parts of our bodies a lot, so the advice is that we should wash our hands with soap first before we go  through all this  process,” the Regional Imam advised through his Secretary, Alhaji Mohammed Ghazal

He also advised the youth, to stay away from bad behaviours that will land them into trouble because they are the future leaders, which requires them to be on their guard.

He added that the Northern Region Ghana Water company should assist them with water, an essential element throughout their fast. He pleaded with the Ghana Water company to at least open the taps as they observe the fast.

"Nonetheless, we have to remain disciplined and observe all the protocols, particularly, on social distancing,” the Regional Imam emphasised.
