Russia has been banned from all major international sporting events for four years by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

The punishment, which can be appealed within 21 days, means Russia cannot feature at next summer’s Tokyo Olympics, or the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Russia athletes will be allowed to compete at any competitions, however, as long as they can prove to be untainted by the doping scandal. Such athletes will compete under a neutral flag, as 168 Russians did during last year’s Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

The punishment was decided by WADA’s executive committee, who voted unanimously in Lausanne, Switzerland on Monday morning.

If Russia decided to appeal the decision, they will present their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Having already qualified for Euro 2020 and been drawn in Group B, Russia will seemingly be allowed to feature at next summer’s tournament as WADA do not regard the European Championships as an ‘international’ event.
