There was crying and wailing when the Ashaiman circuit court jailed a- 20-year-old man to 5 years in prison for child stealing.

Charged on one count of attempted to commit crime namely child stealing; contrary to section 93 of the criminal offences Act 1960(Act 29), the court presided over by His Honour Simon Gaga found the accused guilty per the charge sheet, convicted, and sentenced to 5 years into prison.

Before his judgment,the judge after evaluating the evidence available, he said the prosecution was able to prove the offence of attempting to steal a child under section 93 of Act 29/30 against the accused beyond reasonable doubt.

Prosecution; Chief Inspector Samuel Aperweh presenting the D/Inspector Samuel Antwi investigative case told the court that, the complainant, Melody Azamu aged 35, a trader residing at Ashaiman Tabo-line while the accused person, Amadi Johnson is a labourer at Katamanso, Accra.

He told the court that the complainant has a daughter, Belinda Agbevi aged three(3) years old.

Chief Inspector Aperweh further told the court that on 11-08-2022, at about 1400hrs, the complainant's child was playing in the neighborhood and a witness in the case suddenly heard the child crying.

Upon coming out of her room, she saw the accused person holding the hand of the child and moving away with her amidst the child crying.

He told the court that the witness raised an alarm attracting people to the scene and leading to the arrest of the accused.

He further told the court that the accused was severely beaten and handed over to the Ashaiman Police.

He said that upon investigation, the accused stated that he and two others came from Tudu, Accra to Ashaiman on board a taxi cab with an known registration number to him, to steal a child for money rituals but his accomplices escaped during his arrest.

Case is still under investigation.
