Ethiopia kills al-Shabab militants in border battles

According to the authorities in Ethiopia's eastern Somali area, the army has killed 85 members of the Somali jihadist organization al-Shabab while collaborating with local police.

The army claims that during an operation focused on five border towns where the al-Qaeda-affiliated group has bases, numerous other members were detained.

The reaction follows a previous week's attack on the Ethiopian military close to the Somalia border.

Witnesses told the BBC that they saw the militants entering Ethiopian territory in several vehicles and that there had been fierce fighting.

In that assault, al-Shabab claimed to have killed over 80 soldiers.
