Ex-Nigeria football officials who had been kidnapped have been released

Three former Nigerian football officials who were kidnapped by gunmen on Saturday night have been released, according to a police spokesperson.

Before releasing the trio, which included a former secretary-general of the country's football federation, the kidnappers wanted a ransom.

Between 1993 to 1999, Ahmed Sani Toro worked for what is now known as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

He was abducted together with former Nigeria under-23 assistant coach Garba Ila and Isa Jah as they drove from Abuja to Bauchi after attending the wedding of former NFF president Aminu Maigari's son.

It was unclear whether the kidnappers were paid a ransom before the victims were released.

Kidnappings for ransom by armed gangs, who frequently assault travelers and rural villages, are on the rise in Nigeria.
