Energy Minister reacts to minority's claims of Ameri transfer to Kumasi The Minister of Energy, Honourable Matthew Opoku Prempeh has reacted to the claims by the Minority in Parliament over the transfer of the Ameri Power Plant to Kumasi. According to him, the Minority's allegations mean they have an anti-Ashanti agenda.

The Minister was reacting to the Minority's claims at a press briefing in Parliament today, July 1, 2022. The Honourable Energy Minister revealed that all negotiations for the transfer of the plant were led by the Volta River Authority (VRA). He said 40 staff members of the Volta River Authority (VRA) are expected to be trained for three years before the VRA resumes full operations of the plant. He said the decision was meant to provide a stable electricity supply.

The Minister said those kicking against the transfer of the Ameri Plant do not have the interest of the people of Ghana at home. He called out to anyone who has a concern not to keep those concerns but rather come to him or VRA for clarity. But the minority believes that the Volta River Authority can handle and manage the plant rather than handing it over to a private entity.

They pledged to use every parliamentary process to ensure that this illegitimate way of appropriating the Ameri plant to cronies will not be tolerated. In March 2021, the government gave indications of relocating the Ameri Plant located at Aboadze to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region to help stabilize the national grid.
