Rocket attack kills 17 in Sudan market - medics

According to a Sudanese doctors' union, rockets fired on Wednesday hit a market south of the nation's capital Khartoum, leaving at least 17 people dead and 106 others injured.

Since fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began on April 15, this is the biggest number of persons killed by artillery in an attack near the capital.

As negotiations to terminate the dispute, mediated by the US and Saudi Arabia, broke down, the attack took place.

The Sudanese Doctors' Syndicate posted on its Facebook page that "the Mayo area [Market 6] witnessed violent and bloody shelling this afternoon, which left 17 people dead and more than 106 wounded."
