South Sudan rivals to meet in cabinet reshuffle row

Salva Kiir, the president of South Sudan, and Riek Machar, his first deputy, are scheduled to meet at the State House in the nation's capital, Juba, on Friday to talk about the recent firing of Angelina Teny, the defense minister.

Additionally, Mr. Kiir switched the interior and defense ministries, giving Mr. Machar's opposition party, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), the interior ministry and Mr. Kiir's political party, the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), the defense ministry (SPLM-IO).

The SPLM-IO demanded that Ms. Teny be reinstated to her post and referred to the presidential decrees as "unilateral" and "a violation" of the renewed peace agreement.

By notifying the president, parties are given the authority to propose replacements for their representatives in the council of ministers under the terms of the peace agreement.

According to a representative of Mr. Machar's office, the conference regarding the changes was originally scheduled for Thursday but was moved to Friday at the president's request.

The meeting's statement has been praised by an international organization that is keeping track of how the revitalized peace accord is being implemented.

The Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (RJMEC) said it was encouraging "consultation to resolve the problem of the removal of the defence minister, and encourage the parties to observe the letter and spirit of the revitalised agreement".
