Speaker directs Committee on Defence and Interior to look into reports of Military brutalities from 1992 till date

The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Honorable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has directed the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Interior to as a matter of priority, look into all reports of brutalities brought before the House.
The reports the Speaker directed that is to cover the period between 1993 and 2022 and to ascertain whether or not the proper thing was done.

The Speaker, per his directive, seek to find out if due diligence was done in determining both culprits and victims per the recommendations prescribed.

He said his call for a re-look into those reports was aimed at ensuring that equity was brought to bear to prevent future reoccurrence of the same.

The Speaker's quest for a thorough look into military-civilian crashes was occasioned by the reoccurrence of the pocket of crashes across the country.

The Speaker bemoaned the unfortunate incidences which have claimed many lives and rendered many severely injured aimed at putting a halt to the reoccurrence.


The Speaker understated to ensure that victims or victims of such brutalities were probably compensated.

 
This, he said would help to forestall future brutalities by the personnel within the security agencies and private citizens.
 
The Speaker, addressing Members of Parliament in the House said he was afraid considering the frequency of reoccurrences of brutalities in the country particularly, inching towards the next elections.
Also, he could not understand how sadly citizens have resorted to violence as a way of settling scores.

The Speaker could not understand why some Ghanaians would resort to such an act at the slight provocations and misunderstandings between private citizens and personnel within the security services. 

He maintained the urgent need for such discrepancies to be addressed ahead of the 2024 general elections, ensuring that aggrieved parties receive justice.
He said the fact that the 2024 elections were fast approaching, therefore, called for the need to iron out issues to promote peace.

The Speaker's call follows the extent and frequency of military-civilians crashes that have resulted in brutalities in the country.

The Ayawaso West Wagon bye-elections brutalities, the 2020 elections brutalities and deaths, and Techiman East, amongst others, would top the list of brutalities that would be revisited by the Committee Chaired by Honourable Ken Agyapong.
He said from January 1993, Committees have been established and those reports were to be looked at again to ensure that the right thing was done.
"That is my directive and if leadership disagrees with that directive, let me know now", he said.
