Traders at the new Kejetia Market have acknowledged that sales have been better in this election month as compared to the previous where consumers and majority of sellers shut down interest in visiting market places due to election aftermath.

Ghana visited the polls on December 7 and had the Electoral Commission declare Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the president-elect two days later, yet tensions are still high with protest ongoing in many parts of the country.

The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has failed to concede defeat, revealing that the EC’s figures do not reflect the will of the people.

Traders in the Ashanti Region, the stronghold of the incumbent New Patriotic Party resumed normal commerce activity a day after the polls to fulfil the demand of buyers in the festive season. Whiles other regions are yet to recover from the results of the polls, life in Kumasi is standard as traders are focused on making ends meet.

In an interview with SoireeNews, they did not expect people to come out in numbers and make purchases in comparison to the previous election months. They spoke contentment as some have called on the two giant political parties to put things in order in the country for peace to continue.

Madam Ama Nyarko informed that NDC’s demonstration is creating tensions and warding off customer interests especially those who are from distant places.

“Sales has been good this year. We are all benefitting from the purchases of people and it's not as bad as it sometimes was," she said.

"During election years, commerce is bad because the majority get frightened coming to town with the thought that something bad could happen from the election outcome. This year is different and although sales are limited yet it's better. We didn’t expect much.

"My advice is that NDC and NPP should take things easy in the dealings of the electoral process. Their actions frighten many and cause a downfall in trade.

“My plea to Mahama is to concede defeat, we are the people that voted and applying force to be declared president doesn’t solve the problem. If it didn’t work in your favour, tomorrow is another day. What his supporters are doing is unfortunate, he should advise them because it might go against him next time,” she added.

Yaw Owusu added that “I can’t speak for everybody thought but to me, sales have been good and I appreciate the current atmosphere so well. All hands are not equal and al years cannot be the same. Go through the shops and you’ll see people buying in bulks not only from one place but different shops.

“We appreciate sales whether good or bad. God will never forsake us in such a time so we acknowledge what we are making in such a season,”

Akwasi Appau informed that migrating from the Central Market into the new Kejetia space has in a way affected them for the reason that majority of their customers do not know their whereabouts due to the inappropriate allocation.

“This is a new place and as usual, adapting to such takes time as compared to our former market,” he said.

“We have lost a lot of customers since moving and that has affected us. Most of our people get lost because there were no allocations to direct them to us. They gave us numbers and that helped some to trace us

yet we didn’t expect sales to be up to this level,” he added.
