A Nigerian attack killed pregnant women and children.

Police in Nigeria said they are looking for shooters who killed at least 12 people in the south-eastern state of Anambra, including a pregnant woman and her four children.

Biafra separatists are being blamed by the authorities for the rising violence in the region.

The pregnant woman and her children were going home on a motorcycle taxi when gunmen ambushed them in the Orumba neighborhood, according to a community leader.

On Sunday evening, several other persons were shot and killed in different instances. Police said they're looking into it.

On social media, the killings have generated indignation.

They occurred one day after the mutilated bodies of a local politician and his aide were discovered a week after they had been kidnapped.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob), a proscribed separatist organization that is pushing for a breakaway state in the region, is being blamed for the escalating violence in south-eastern Nigeria.

Some of the attacks have been rejected by the organization.

In other parts of Nigeria, security authorities are battling numerous armed groups that are carrying out murders and kidnappings.

More than 30 persons were slain or kidnapped in an attack in Borno state in the northeast of the country last Sunday.

In the region, Boko Haram and an IS-affiliated militia are active.

The widespread insecurity is a key source of concern ahead of the elections in February of next year.
