Lumumba's remains are awaiting an emotional homecoming

The coffin of independence hero Patrice Lumumba is scheduled to return to the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Wednesday after a nine-day journey around the nation.

Mr. Lumumba was executed by firing squad in 1961, and all that's left of him is a gold-crowned tooth. His body was then dissolved in acid.

From Brussels, where the former colonial authority returned the tooth to Mr. Lumumba's family, the plane carrying the coffin will land in the nation's capital, Kinshasa.

Before the tooth is brought to a recently constructed mausoleum in Kinshasa, the casket will travel the enormous nation, stopping in the village where Mr. Lumumba was born.

According to the AFP news agency, the tour is anticipated to be highly charged.
