The Ga Central Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) in the Greater Accra Region,Mr. Mohammed Basiru, has announced his outfit commitment and preparedness to embark on community "Operation Wear Your Nose Marks" educational campaign exercise.

The exercise, he explained was aimed at educating the various food sellers or vendors to respect the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and World Health Organization coronavirus (COVID-19) safety protocols.

The exercise, according to the MCE, would be led by him with the supreme support of the Ga Central Municipal COVID-19 Taskforce and police officers, saying that all these efforts is geared towards the fight against the spread of the virus in the electoral areas within the municipality.

Mr. Basiru stated that his outfit has decided to embark on the exercise because they realised that the masks are now recognized as one of the most effective available tools to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

He maintained that their checks have revealed that almost majority of the food sellers in the municipality served their customers with foods without wearing the masks, indicating that masking can protect the public from both symptomatic and asymptomatic spread of the virus.

However, the MCE asserted that it is challenging for these food sellers to turn away customers for not wearing masks, particularly at a time when businesses have been significantly impacted by the pandemic.

He pointed out that the Assembly has intensified public education on the safety protocols of the COVID-19 pandemic but the lack of enforcement has empowered a minority of citizens to protest mask requirements in businesses, sometimes with violence.

"From time-to-time we have visited the public places like lorry park stations, churches, hospitals, schools, mosques and social gathering premises to educate the people to ensure strict adherence to the COVID-19 pandemic safety protocols," he stated.

According to him, the Assembly has distributed a lot of COVID-19 Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to lorry stations, churches, hospitals and schools.

He indicated that at any public gathering or programme within the electoral areas of the municipality, the Assembly insisted the strict adherence of the COVID-19 pandemic safety protocols.

He noted that aside that they have distributed the Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to the transport sector within the municipality, saying that all these efforts is geared towards the fight against the spread of the virus in the electoral areas within the municipality.

"I am declaring that very soon, the Assembly is going to institute purntive measures against those who fail to abide by the law of wearing nose masks. We want to ensure that the people respect the strict safety protocols of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We are going to use the Assembly taskforce together with the police officers to go round within the municipality to warn food vendors who fail to wear the nose masks before serving the public.

"And after that when they failed to comply with the directive, l would personal take trouble to ensure the recalcitrant food vendors who disobey the COVID-19 pandemic safety protocols are dealt with.
