Akufo-Addo Claim Not To Use State Fund To Construct National Cathedral Is A Lie—Prof Gyampo
A Senior Political Science Lecturer and Director of the Centre for European Studies of the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Edward Van Gyampo, has taken a swipe at President Nana Addi Dankwa Addo Akufo-Addo for not telling Ghanaians about the real sources of the funding using for construction of controversial National Cathedral of Ghana project.
According to the political scientist, the public claim made by President Akufo-Addo to the effect that no state funding was going to be used for the project was a complete lie and dared the President to submit himself to public scrutiny.
In a news item captured by Soireenews.com, Prof Ransford Gyampo writes that "Yesterday, I drove to the site for the construction of the national cathedral to see things for myself.
He noted that "I had gotten the information that, no work was being done and doubted how this could be true, given the huge sums
of money spent on the project.
Truly, Prof Ransford Gyampo indicated that there was no work ongoing and the place looked abandoned.
"We were told no state funding was going to be used for the project.
"But it was a lie and no one has had the humility to apologize to Ghanaians because, in the figment of some people’s imagination,
we are all supposed to be dogmatic and sycophantic supporters of President Akufo Addo even if he is wrong. Really?
"No doubt we’ve got the guts to still talk about breaking the eight even when we cannot keep Ghana switched on," he noted.
According to him, the outcome of the 2024 elections would be a key determinant about the extent to which we must take our mental health seriously.
"We may either be a very sane people or may have allowed excessive partisanship to render us insane.
"Is it still the cliche that “Cathedral no de3 y3 be si!”? Is the government expecting this project to be carried out by its successor? Someone must answer for this huge financial loss to the state," he stressed.
The controversial National Cathedral is a historic project that provides a sacred space and infrastructure for the formal religious
activities of the nation, like state funerals and presidential inaugural services.
It is this national character that distinguishes it from the other Cathedrals in the country.
