Berekum Municipal Ghana Cocoa Farmers Association Cry To Government and COCOBOD to Increase Cocoa Prices from GHC660.00 to GHC1000.00.

The Ghana Cocoa Farmers Association together with its chief Farmers in Berekum East Municipality of the Bono Region have called on the government of Ghana and the Ghana Cocoa Board as matter of urgency to increase the price of cocoa from the current price of GHC660.00 per bag to Ghc1000.00 in the 2022 -2023 cocoa season.

Speaking at a press conference in Berekum, the secretary of the Association, Nana Kwadwo Baobeng told the media that, the high cost of building materials, agro-inputs, fuel prices, utility services, and transportation fares has brought an untold burden to the livelihood of Ghana cocoa farmers posing high cost of living to the farmers hence the reason for calling on the government to increase the price of cocoa from GHc660.00 to GHc1000.00 for the benefit of farmers.

He said, all government workers' salaries have been increased due to the economic challenges facing the country, and the government cushioning workers with some support such as teachers receiving their COLA allowance and other benefits to the civil servants and neglecting farmers is highly unacceptable with the treatment being meted at the farmers.

Adding that, the hardship the farmers are growing through is unbearable and if care is not taken the situation of farmers will deter most of the youth in the country to venture into farming which in the end will reduce Ghana's Cocoa production in the country thereby reducing our foreign exchange.

The Chief Farmer of Berekum Municipal and the Chairman of the Association, Nana Kwasi Diawuo also alerted the attention of the government and the Ghana Cocoa Board to be aware that, cocoa farmers also attend the same market as other citizens and the government showed commitment to assist businesses to grow why not also Cocoa farmers deserve same therefore the current price of Cocoa should be increased to GHc1000.00 in 2022-2023 cocoa season since what is good for the gander is good for the goose.
