Fire outbreak at Regional Office will not affect upcoming elections - EC

The Electoral Commission says the fire outbreak today at its Greater Accra Regional Office located at Sapeiman near Amasaman will not affect the upcoming December 2020

The acting Public Affairs Director of the Commission, Mrs Sylvia Annor the main office building was not affected by the fire, rather, portions of its warehouse which was gutted.

She said election materials which were stored in the building were destroyed.

Some of the materials included voter registration forms used in the 2012 elections.

The fire reportedly started at 2.30 am on August 14, 2020.

The Ghana Police Service said four fire tenders from Amasaman, Kotoku, Nsawam and Abelemkpe were brought onto the scene to quench the fire and provide security.

Mrs Annor said investigations by the GNFS and other security agencies has commenced and the report will be made public when it was ready.

"It is important to assure the general public that the fire outbreak will not affect the conduct of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections," Mrs Annor assured.

Data at our Accra office safe

The Electoral Commission (EC) says its Accra Regional data centre is ‘safe and secure’ despite fire outbreak at the facility.

It said the fire struck the storage facility of the office and destroyed a number of used items including old forms, ballot boxes and referendum stationery and that its data centre is intact.

“The Commission entreats the General Public to ignore the falsehood being peddled on social media to the effect that its Data Centre was destroyed by the fire. The Electoral Commission assures the General Public that its Data Centre is safe and secure”, the statement noted.
