The Ghana National Petroleum Cooperation Foundation has handed over a 12-Unit classroom to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to commence academic activities for the John Agyekum Kuffuor Senior High School at Sokoban in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

The project was phase 2 of the Sokoban Wood Project yet tarried due to a change of government following the eight years reign of the former president of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor to give way to the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills.

The school was part of the build-up of the Sokoban Wood Village due to traders’ devotion to their profession on the grounds, which on the other hand affected the academics of their wards by turning up late home.

The former president of Ghana then decided to construct an educational edifice purposely to accommodate wards of traders at the Sokoban wood village from Kindergarten to Senior High School level yet the lack of interest by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government tarried the entire project leading to the sale of portions of the land.

“It was the vision of the former president, JA Kufuor to evacuate all traders at Anloga junction to pave way for the interchange hence the creation of the Wood Village at Sokoban to accommodate those workers,” the headmaster of JA Kufuor SHS, Mr Frimpong Boateng said.

“When trade commenced at the wood village, he noticed that traders spend almost all their time at the wood village and normally wait for their wards to close from schools before leaving for home. He believed there was a way to make things easier for traders so he decided to embark on a school project, which formed part of phase two of the Sokoban wood village.

“It was not in the interest of the NDC government to further the vision of the former president so the attention was cut short as part of the land was sold. GNPC then decided to help us develop the land to fulfil the vision of former President Kufuor,” he added.

A Consultant of GNPC, Louis Ansah on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, stood in on behalf of the Petroleum Cooperation to hand over the 12-Unit Classroom to the Assembly through the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Mayor, Honorable Osei Assibey Antwi.

He expressed gratitude to the Foundation and addressed that the school is a symbol for the good work done by the former President of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor.

Nananom were also not left out as acknowledgement was made for the land provided and their support. He told that the desks for the students will be available on Friday before first-year students commence on Monday, March 22, 2021.

The headmaster added that the unavailability of a science laboratory led to a halt in admitting science students in the first year yet an assurance has been given by the Foundation that a workroom will soon be provided together with an AstroTurf for sports.

He revealed that 800 people have been enrolled and will commence school on Monday

The Abusuapanin of Sokoban, Nana Asante Nkansah on behalf of the Chief of Sokoban offered thanks to GNPC and the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo for such a life-transforming infrastructure in the community.
