Intelligence assessments suggest that Ghanaians have been implicated in terrorist strikes in the Sahel region.

According to Ghana's Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, intelligence gathered by the country's national security apparatus suggests that some Ghanaians are actively involved in terrorist acts in the Sahel region.

Because of the potential for radicals to recruit Ghanaians for terrorist actions, he believes it is vital to increase security education.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah told the media in Accra on Sunday that the National Security Ministry will launch a series of public awareness programs to notify the public to be on high alert.

"On the 11th of May 2022, roughly ten military personnel were killed in Togo as a result of a terrorist strike. Intelligence sources are increasingly indicating that certain Ghanaians are involved in terrorist acts in the Sahelian region.

"This indicates that some of these terrorist organizations in the West African sub-region may have attempted to recruit Ghanaians."

"In line with current security procedures, the Ministry of National Security has authorized an elevated degree of awareness among the intelligence community and intends to deepen contact with the Ghanaian public," he stated.

Meanwhile, Edward Asomani, the Deputy National Security Coordinator, has stated that the Ministry is on top of the situation and will do everything possible to guarantee the nation's security is not jeopardized.
