Former Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki died on Friday, and Kenyan politicians are paying respect to him.

Deputy President William Ruto, who served in Mr. Kibaki's government as a minister, has referred to him as a "great son of the country."

Musalia Mudavadi, an opposition leader who served as Mr. Kibaki's deputy prime minister, paid tribute to "an exceptional Kenyan who participated in the effort to free the country from the shackles of colonialism and lay the framework for the economic rewards that Kenya is enjoying today."
