Oppong Nkrumah set right Mahama's claims, says it could endanger the peace of Ghana
Honorable Kojo Oppong Nkrumah - Minister of Information

The Minister of Information, Honorable Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has rectified assertions made by candidate John Dramani Mahama that Electoral Commission, the Ghanaian Media and the Military have conspired to rig Ghana’s elections in favour of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo of the New Patriotic Party.

The former president in his speech stressed that he believes the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is comfortably winning and that, they will reject moves to 'subvert the will of the people' and urged his people to jubilate for they have won the elections.

Addressing the media from the conference hall of the Information Ministry as part of the ruling government, Honorable Kojo Oppong Nkrumah informed that Mr Mahama’s comments have the tendency to “endanger public safety, raise public tensions and even undermine the sanctity of the ongoing process” hence government’s intervention expound matters.

“Candidate John Dramani Mahama of the NDC is claiming that his party has gained a parliamentary majority,” Oppong Nkrumah addressed.

“He is also calling on his supporters to jubilate and we plainly understand that it is a dog-whistle for people to get out of the street.

“He is also making comments to undermine the work of state institutions including the electoral commission and the Military and the government need to respond in these moments.

“He is also making comments attacking the work of the Ghanaian media and we think it’s important that these matters need to be addressed,” he added.

The Information Minister rebuffed the claims of the NDC presidential candidate and informed the Ghanaian public not to be deceived but wait for the official declaration of results by the Electoral Commission.

“The claim by candidate Mahama that his party has won parliament majority is false. There are returning officers at the 275 constituencies and they collate the results and declare who has won the constituencies.

“The Ghanaian media is splittered across all the constituencies in the collation centres and if anybody has gained 140 seats in parliament by now, you’ll know. They do not have a parliamentary majority. We don’t want the international community listening to start getting this idea that Mr Mahama’s party has got a parliamentary majority. Please do not be deceived.

He also condemned the NDC’s call to supporters to jubilate following their ‘supposed’ victory and warned they could be disappointed in the long run.

“The dog whistle to supporters to get out on the streets to jubilate is wrong and we are happy it has not been largely heeded by the Ghanaian people because they can discern. It is utterly irresponsible and it flies in the face of good conduct and even the peace pact that the candidates signed a few days to the elections.

“So far the exercise conducted has been smooth as we can all attest to. No candidate should at this stage get into this exercise seek to undermine the work of the Electoral Commission. It is most irresponsible and would endanger the peace of this nation.”
