Parliament summons finance minister to account for the covid fund

Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Honorable Alban Sumana Bagbin has directed the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta to appear before parliament to render an account on the covid fund before the government should consider contracting another loan.
The Speaker's directive follows an earlier motion moved on the floor of parliament by Honourable Cassel Ato Forson requesting the finance minister to make an account on the covid fund.
On Thursday, May 26, 2022, Honourable Rockson-Nelson Else Kwami Dafeamekpor moved the same motion for an inquest into how much the fund has accrued and how the money has been expended.
The two MPs' call follows the government's plan to contract a loan from the European Investment Bank which loan the government thinks was a concessional loan( cheap loan).
According to the government, it has decided to go for a cheaper loan offered by the European Investment Bank which the government has expressed interest in.

But Honourable Dafeamekpor thinks that not until an account has been made on the covid fund, it would not be healthy for government to contract another loan.
The government sent says if it does not go for the European Investment Bank's loan, it has to borrow from the local market which it thinks would be too expensive.
The bank of Ghana last Monday announced that Ghana's nominal debt has risen to a whopping GHS391billion.

Honorable Dafeamekpor however said Ghana's debt announced by the BoG excludes all other loans including the cyanohydrin loan, Get fund loan amongst others, contracted by Ghana and that it would be proper for the government to contract another loan.
