According to state-run channel Sudan TV, President Salva Kiir of South Sudan and Lt Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan of the Sudanese military have agreed to establish a joint force to guard the 1,800 km (1,120 mi) border between their two nations.

The two leaders met on Thursday in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, and then announced their agreement.

The discussions were also attended by the defense and foreign ministers of the two nations.

The statement claimed that Gen Burhan and Mr. Kiir also spoke about the contentious Abyei region and called for "frequent joint meetings" to settle the conflict over the territory.

Additionally, Mr. Kiir gave Burhan an update on the status of the 2018 South Sudan peace accord, one of which Sudan is a major guarantor.
