US urges more democratic inclusion in Tunisia

In light of the recent parliamentary elections' low turnout, the United States has urged Tunisia to demonstrate greater democratic inclusion.

Only 11% of voters participated in the Sunday-ending second round of voting.

According to State Department spokesman Vedant Patel, "the low voter turnout highlights the desperate need for the government to engage in a more inclusive route moving forward to further broaden political involvement."

After the president shut down parliament in 2021 and granted himself nearly limitless executive powers, opposition parties boycotted the election, charging him with plotting a coup.

Mr. Saied has defended the low turnout as a reflection of voter resentment of the legislature.
