Zimbabwe court blocks release of electronic voters' roll

The release of the electronic voters' list to the public has been prohibited by a high court in Zimbabwe due to national security fears that it could be manipulated.

This comes after an opposition MP named Allan Makharm filed a lawsuit against the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) after it turned down his plea for a copy in October of last year.

The MP claimed that the electronic copy was best for review because he would find it inconvenient and costly to use a printed copy.

The voters' list, however, was deemed too sensitive to be made public by the Harare High Court on Tuesday without resolving security issues brought up by Zec.

The electoral committee was required, according to the court, to safeguard the roll against fraud and manipulation.

Zimbabwe is scheduled to hold general elections in July.
