The story behind Ansu Fati’s €100 million transfer to Manchester United has been clarified by Spanish news outlet, Marca.

The Daily Express on Thursday reported that the English club may opt to pursue Barcelona ace Ansu Fati instead of Jadon Sancho because the deal would be cheaper.

According to Marca, Barcelona have received no bid for the Guinea-Bissau international and the transaction took place before the coronavirus pandemic struck.

Narrating the story, the Spanish news outlet disclosed that “Back in January, a major European club were willing to invest heavily in a young talented attacker and they enquired through the agent Jorge Mendes about Atletico Madrid's Joao Felix.

“However, Los Rojiblancos were not eager to part ways with the Portuguese, whom they signed a few months before for 126 million euros.

“The aforementioned club turned their sights on Ansu Fati, for whom they were keen to spend 100m euros,” they added.

The information was communicated by Mendes to Barcelona but the Catalan side ignored the move and decided to give the 17-years more playing time with both Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele injured then.

Marca updated that “Ansu Fati renewed his contract with Barcelona last December, improving his wages and increasing his release clause from 100m euros to 170m euros.

“The release clause will skyrocket to 400m euros when the 17-year-old turns 18 in October.”
