Chris Wilder has left his role as the manager of Sheffield United.

The manager who revealed the lack of backing from the club’s board of directors after Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Southampton has abandoned the Blades after a ruinous season in the Premier League.

“There's so many things we need to address,” he said.

“We need to keep our best players. There's a couple who need to go. They have to go at the end of the season.

“I'd like to shake it up quicker. We looked like we'd run our race.”

The boyhood fan guided the Blades from the Championship into the Premier League last season having taken over in May 2016. The club impressed by placing ninth in the 2019/2020 season with expectations so high the following season to qualify into the top four yet they have managed just four wins from 28 games, scoring 16 and conceding 45.

The club is yet to make an official announcement of the manager’s exit.
