District Assembly Level Elections: Pressure Mounts On EC To Set Date That Is Convenient For Most Voters

ONE OF THE ASPIRING Assembly Members for the Ayermesu Electoral Area, Moses Tettey Dometey advocated measures to increase voter participation in the District Assembly level elections.

He appealed to the government to declare December 19, 2023 as a national holiday or the Ghana Electoral Commission to reschedule the District Assembly elections at the weekend which can certainly help make it easier for voters to participate.

He argued that, making Election Day a public holiday or scheduling it on a weekend would ensure that individual workers, who might find it difficult to take time off, could exercise their right to vote.

This will ease the burden of having to juggle work responsibilities with a commitment to participate in the democratic process.

In addition, holding elections on public holidays or weekends will make it easier for voters to go to the polls. They don't have to rush through their day or worry about fitting voting into their already hectic schedule. This ease could encourage more individuals to attend and participate in the electoral process, Moses stressed.

He explained that, holding the election on a public holiday or the weekend sends a strong signal about the importance of civic engagement and democratic participation.

This reinforces the idea that elections are important events that must be prioritized, leading to a sense of civic duty and greater participation among citizens.

"Holding the election on a public holiday or the weekend could increase voter participation. When the wider population participates in elections, it ensures that the resulting elected officials truly reflect the wishes and preferences of the people. It strengthens the legitimacy of elected representatives and promotes a more balanced representation of different views and interests in society," he stressed

Against this back ground, he appealed to the government, the Electoral Commission and all relevant agencies to reconsider the date set for the elections to the District Assemblies so that voters are not deprived of their rights.
