French minister champions gay rights in Africa

The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Value Bill, which would criminalize support for homosexual rights and impose jail terms on those who identify as LGBTQ, is currently being discussed by legislators in Ghana.

French minister champions gay rights in Africa

Chrysoula Zacharopoulou, the French Minister for International Partnerships, has urged African nations to uphold the rights of LGBTQ persons.

Ms. Zacharopoulou declared that defending LGBTQ rights was one of her fundamental values and that she would continue to fight for their rights wherever she went in Africa on Monday at a press conference in Ghana's capital, Accra.

I can say that these are our values and that wherever I go in Africa, I will continue to say that we have to respect all of us, the LGBTQ community - this is a question of human rights and I always say that.

My country and the European Union both promote human rights, and of course, in my ministry, we have an ambassador to promote LGBT rights.

The most recent foreign official to advocate for homosexual rights in Ghana is Ms. Zacharopoulou, who is in Ghana for three days.

Similar remarks about LGBTQ rights being human rights were made by US Vice President Kamala Harris last week while she was visiting Ghana.

Last Monday, President Nana Addo Akufo-Addo declared that the bill had been "modified" as a result of his administration's involvement.
