Kenya launches new generation vehicle number plates

A new generation of motor vehicle registration plates has been revealed by Kenyan authorities to combat plate fraud, duplication, and swapping.

The new license plates will contain special serial numbers and other built-in security elements to make it possible to track down the ownership of a vehicle.

Additionally, it will guarantee that all required taxes are paid on all imported vehicles.

At the unveiling, Interior Minister Fred Matiang'i remarked, "Commissioning of the new generation number plates represents a historic occasion in securitizing vehicle registration by closing loopholes used by financial fraudsters and unscrupulous motor vehicle importers."

Car owners must pay $25 (£21) to get the new license plates, which go on sale in October.

Within the next 12 months, the government plans to replace the license plates on 4.8 million automobiles.
