A former Deputy Minister of Health, Robert Joseph Mettle-Nunoo is expected to mount the witness box in the ongoing election petition today, February 5, 2021.

This follows the filing of his witness statement in support of NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

Mr Mettle-Nunoo was one of the representatives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Electoral Commission’s (EC) ‘strong room’ during election 2020.

He is the third witness to be called upon by lawyers for Mr Mahama, and is expected to be cross-examined by lawyers for the two respondents, the Electoral Commission (EC) and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo) when the Supreme Court resumes hearing of the petition today, February 5, 2021.

During his time in the witness box, the second witness for the petitioner, Dr Michael Kpessa-Whyte alleged that his colleague (Rojo Mettle-Nunoo) informed him of an instruction by the EC to deliver a message to Mr. Mahama who is the petitioner in the case.

This allegation by Dr. Kpessah-Whyte has since been questioned, as many believe Mr. Mettle-Nunoo, who personally interacted with the EC boss, should have testified to it at the apex court.

Subsequently, lead counsel for the petitioner, Tsatsu Tsikata revealed after hearing on Wednesday that they would like to file a new witness.

He explained that the new witness had some health complications and due to the confidentiality of the witness’ condition, he would prefer the Court to hear him in chambers.

The court subsequently adjourned sitting to Friday, February 5.
