New Voters’ Register: EC to Test Biometric Devices on Thursday

Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) will on Thursday, June 18, 2020, exhibit and pilot some of its biometric registration devices ahead of the mass registration exercise later this month.

The EC says the exhibition which is open to the public will be a test for the registration.

Meanwhile, dismissing claims of creating new constituencies ahead of the election, the Commission said it was only seeking new constitutional instrument to cover the newly created electoral areas.

“We are not creating new constituencies. What we are basically doing is that new electoral areas were created and new polling stations were created so we have to make sure that we have a C.I. that will cover all that so no new constituencies are being created by the EC” the Deputy Chairperson of the EC, Dr. Bossman Asare said in an interview with journalists.

In related development, On Tuesday, EC officials appeared before Parliament’s  Special Budget Committee to brief the committee on their planned programmes for the year.

The Minority has however expressed disappointment in the EC’s briefing.

The Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu for instance said, responses given by the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, were very “concerning” and troubling to future democracy.

He said “they (EC)  intend to phase out the registration exercise in some 6,300 registration centres out of the 33,000 registration centres across the country…That troubles my heart because Article 42 will not be observed in essence through making available to Ghanaian people are legitimate right they are entitled to.”
