Premier League will switch from three to five substitutes when season resumes
For the rest of 2019/20 up to five substitutions to be allowed in a match and team benches will increase to nine players

The Premier League rules relating to three substitutes per match has been changed to five.

The statement released by the PL on Thursday, June 4, 2020, disclosed that the decision is “in line with the temporary law amendment made by the International Football Association Board last month.”

“Premier League Shareholders today agreed temporary changes to the rules relating to substitute players.

“For the remainder of the 2019/20 season, the number of substitutes that can be used during a match will increase from three to five players, “the statement said.

MARCA reported last month that FIFA was set to agree to a move, which will permit five substitutions per match to ensure the health of every professional and staff member involved in the return of football.

The change was requested by the English Football Association and the news was well received by FIFA in an attempt to lower the risk of injury to players, who will be playing a large number of matches in a very short time frame.

However, to avoid constant periods of changes these substitutions will only be allowed to be carried out at three specific points in a match.

The statement detailed that the number of substitute players on the bench will be increased from seven to nine until the current campaign ends.

“Shareholders also approved for Clubs to increase the maximum number of substitute players on the bench from seven to nine for the rest of the 2019/20 season,” it ended.
