Tanker briefly blocks Egypt's Suez Canal

On Wednesday evening, an oil tanker capsized in Egypt's Suez Canal, briefly shutting a portion of the canal and snarling maritime traffic.

After the Singapore-flagged vessel Affinity, V was refloated by tug boats, traffic resumed some hours later.

According to the Suez Canal Authority, the event was brought on by a technical issue with the ship's radar that led to a loss of control.

Over 10% of all marine trade passes through the Suez Canal, a key waterway that links the Mediterranean and the Red Sea.

The Ever Given, a sizable container ship, ran aground last year after becoming trapped diagonally on the channel.

The stranded vessel caused concern and annoyance for the world's maritime industry for approximately a week until it was eventually rescued.
