Travesty of justice; they have weaponized our democracy-Dr Zanetor

Legislator for the Klottey Korle constituency, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has decried what she termed "New Patriotic Party's(NPP's) weaponizing of the country's democracy against the people of Ghana".

The move, according to the medical doctor and lawmaker, is a travesty of justice.

The lawmaker made the statement as part of her address at the 42nd commemoration of the 31st December Revolution in Accra recently.

Ms Agyeman-Rawlings could not understand why the same foundation and principles upon which the country's democracy was established had easily been eroded by the Akufo Addo-Bawumia-led government who claimed to be masters of the understanding of democracy.

The lawmaker stressed, "It is heartbreaking that 42 years later, some people who say they knew what democracy is all about have weaponized the same and are using it against the people of this country. That is a travesty of justice".

"What do I mean by the travesty of justice?, yes, they understand the technicalities of how to twist the law in their favor", Honourable Rawlings explained.

She admonished, "When you are in government, you make laws in the interest of posterity and national vision. You make laws and think about how those laws will affect you when you are in opposition. Which means, you don't make laws from the point of being power drunk".

She cautioned, "When people use the ballot to get to power by fair or foul means, and then proceed to use their incumbency to undermine the very principle of good governance that lay the foundation for them in the first place, they become a danger to our democracy".

She sends a strong message to the umbrella fraternity stating, "The battle for 2024, is not only about how to get the NDC to power, but it's about how to restore the principles of good governance; the very principles upon which the Revolution was started, and which this fourth republic has been established".

"Now, is the time to be honest about who we are and what we stand for. We must have zero tolerance for those who are destroying. If we are going to say in the name of peace we are leaving those who are destroying, there will not be peace nor will there be any victory. The back does not stop with leadership. Each and everyone has a responsibility to protect the principles of probity, accountability, transparency, and rule of law".

She bemoans, "In all our years, I do not think we have experienced this level of corruption. If people were sacrificed for less, then what we are seeing now must encourage us as members of the NDC to attract those who believe in the principles and must work to preserve them".

She stated ostensibly, "We are not coming to power to amass wealth and take what does not rightfully belong to us like the NPP, but to restore but to restore hope to the people of this country".
