Bruno Fernandes disappointed at his effort on target

Manchester United ended their longest away winning run in all competitions following a 2-1 loss to Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday night in Turkey

First-half goals from Demba Ba and Visca gave the homeside the three points before  Anthony Martial pulled one back for the Red Devils.

Donny van de Beek started for the second straight Champions League game for Manchester United, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made five changes to his side. Dean Henderson made his first start, Lindelof, Fred, Pogba and Greenwood also made way for Tuanzebe, Mata, Fernandes and Rashford into the starting line up.

Demba Ba, the former Chelsea and Newcastle striker and former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel started for the Turkish side so did former Man Utd full-back, Rafael.

Ba struck as early as the 13-minute for Basaksehir. United won a corner and committed too many men forward and Višća showed great vision with a superb long ball that Demba Ba who was waiting just inside his own half sprinted on to before side-footing past Henderson.

Rafael made a decent block which prevented Martial from putting the English side level. The Brazilian got in the way of the Frenchman’s shot from 15 yards after he was found by Wan-Bissaka and kept him shut.

Basaksehir doubled their lead five minutes to end the first half after Turuc’s assist. Deniz Türüc hustled Mata out of possession on halfway and blazed a trail down the left, clipping in a low pass that Ba cleverly dummied. Višća run on to it and he blasted past Henderson.

Two minutes later, Anthony Martial halved the deficit for the English side. Shaw did much of the hard work, making space on the left for a fine corner that Martial nodded in from close range after the Başakşehir defence appeared to have switched off.

The second half was an even affair with both sides looking for another goal. United were looking to level the scores as the homeside were fought to put the game to bed. Mc Tominay was introduced for Tuanzebe which necessitated a change at the back.

Bruno Fernandes missed the target in the 57-minute after a decent set-piece talent around the ball. The ball was too centred following his freekick at the edge of the box but Mert Günok acrobatically pushed it away.

The visitors were camped around the Başakşehir penalty area and were prohibited from entering the home defence. United mustered only one effort on target from open play since Martial’s first-half goal as the home side kept pressing them for a third.

Basaksehir denied Manchester United the equalizer after an unbelievable goal-line clearance. He prevented an own goal from Mehmet Topal to grant the Turkish their first Champion’s League victory.
