UK to aid activists in Egypt who are on a hunger strike
After being charged with distributing false information, Mr. Fattah received a five-year prison sentence in December of last year.
To gain the release of a detained activist who has been on a partial hunger strike since April, Britain's Foreign Secretary Liz Truss says she is seeking a meeting with her Egyptian counterpart.
Because his mother was born in the UK, Alaa Abdel Fattah was granted British citizenship.
He played a significant role in the 2011 uprising that led to the overthrow of Egypt's dictatorial leader Hosni Mubarak.
After being charged with distributing false information, Mr. Fattah received a five-year prison sentence in December of last year.
His family is grateful for Ms. Truss's promise because they believe there is not much time left to assist him.
