Dope Nation, a Ghanaian music duo, has discussed the music landscape in Ghana and pointed out that much of what is perceived as innovative in music is actually based on appropriating and changing preexisting aspects.

Dope Nation: The Ghanaian music industry is all about copying and lacks originality

They noted that the process of creating music in Ghana frequently entails repurposing melodies and chord progressions from older tunes.

"Our fundamentals when it comes to music is copying because when you take our progressions and melodies, they are from old songs," they remarked in a TV3 interview. Simply by biting them, we transform them into something new.

The keys and melodies are already there and have been used up, so we can't claim to be generating anything new. The only thing we can do is force them to change.

They emphasized, however, that real innovation entails taking these already-existing components and forcing them to advance. They don't think they're inventing anything wholly novel, but they do see possibility in altering these well-known elements

Dope Nation also talked about their brand-new musical style, "Ghanapiano." They mentioned that they are mixing many genres to create this new sound. They took advantage of the opportunity to produce something unique by conducting research and using their own instruments to shape the tunes since they noticed that the world was paying attention to African music and the piano sound.

They responded positively when asked if they were convinced Ghanaians would like their new sound. They admitted that while some of their earlier tunes had 'Ghanapiano' characteristics, they were now giving it a unique identity

Although they aren't creating anything wholly original, they think they can make well-known musical aspects change in intriguing ways.

They're also enthusiastic about their brand-new sound, "Ghanapiano," which combines many musical genres, and they believe Ghanaians would like it.
