A documentary premiered by O Africa, TigerPI has pointed out the massive disregard for laws in the mining sector.

The documentary revealed that despite Ghana's subscription to the Minamata Conventions on mercury usage, the country has yet to show real commitment.

This is because the use of mercury particularly in the small-scale mining sector is raising concerns and a cause to worry with its attendant effects. Ratified in 2017, the Minamata Convention on Mercury use which aims to train healthcare workers on the effects of mercury, reduce its use in small-scale gold mining, promote mercury-free methods, and control mercury trade around the world seems not to have been followed.

One could not lay hands on a concrete action and checks and balances, to mitigate the canker, a cause for great worry to watchers. The documentary has established that the use of mercury has put Ghana's future generations on the verge of extinction demanding urgent measures to mitigate the same.

Open prostitution by girls between the ages of 10 and 15, abuse of alcohol, illicit use of marijuana and other hard drugs like cocaine and heroin, incidents of armed robbery, falling educational standards, in affected communities, blatant disregard for laws, order, and custom exhibited at high levels triggered the uncovering work.

A call for all well-meaning individuals to help remedy the situation as the documentary aims at saving the future generations of Ghana. The documentary explained that children's continual exposure to mercury during galamsey operations has obvious attendant damage to their central nervous system.

Apart from that, the Ghanaian environment, the documentary highlighted, which is fast-degrading as a result of the activities of galamsey, and its ripple effects on society requires a pragmatic commitment from stakeholders.
