Ghana decriminalises attempted suicide

The Criminal Offenses Act of 1960 has been amended by Ghana's parliament, making it a crime to try to end one's own life.

As a result of the amendment made on Tuesday, attempted suicide will now be regarded as a mental health condition needing legal assistance, according to Ghana's TV3 network.

Ghanaian medical professionals have pushed for a change in the legislation, arguing that attempted suicide is a medical condition that requires treatment rather than imprisonment.

According to local media, 1,500 suicide cases are recorded nationwide each year.
