Ghana warns against using banknotes as gift hampers

The Bank of Ghana has issued a warning to the public about giving gifts to others using local currency as flowers and hampers.

When people celebrate marriages, birthdays, and other occasions in the nation, it's not unusual to see folded bills in bouquets and hampers.

Dominic Owusu, head of the currency division, claimed that the practice, however, makes it simpler for banknotes to deteriorate or become vandalized.

"cease doing such things; they are against the rules, so you must cease. Go out and purchase presents if you want to give a gift, Mr. Owusu advised on Thursday.

He claimed that replacing damaged and worn-out bills is expensive and having an impact on the central bank's operations.

Mr. Owusu, in the meantime, refuted rumors that the Bank of Ghana was releasing fresh 500 cedi coins.
